The Manuscript Codex * The Binding
TAB

Projection of the spine leather past the end of the cover spine at the head and tail. When leather was applied to the boards, the binder turned-in the leather on the head and tail of the boards but cut the ends of the spine to leave a raw edge on this extension. These structures may also have served to cover and protect the endband, and/or had a decorative function.
